What Does Dry Needling Feel Like? A Walk Through Your First Session

Most people feel a small pinch as the needle goes in, then a deep ache or a quick twitch as the muscle releases. If there is a strong sensation, it is a brief one, and I check in with you the whole time. Afterward the area may feel sore for a day or two, much like after a hard workout.

Before any needles: talking and looking

Your first visit starts with a conversation. We go over your history, what you have already tried, and what you want to get back to doing.

Then I look at how you move. I check which muscles are tight or weak and which nerves are involved, because the place that hurts is not always the place that needs treatment. With neck pain or shoulder pain, for example, the muscles driving it are often a few inches away from the sore spot.

Before anything else happens, I explain what I found and what I recommend. You can ask anything, and we only start when you are ready.

Does dry needling hurt?

Less than most people expect. Dry needling uses very fine, solid filament needles, far thinner than the hollow needle used for a shot or a blood draw. Most people barely feel it pass through the skin. What you notice comes next, when the needle reaches the muscle.

The twitch

When the needle reaches a trigger point, the muscle often gives a quick twitch. It can feel like a small jump, or a cramp that lets go within a second. The first one can be surprising.

That twitch is the release I am looking for. It helps break the cycle of pain and spasm, lets the muscle return to its normal length, and brings blood flow back to the area.

The deep ache

Some spots bring on a deep, familiar ache, often the same pain you came in with. Patients often say "that's it" when it happens. That recognition is useful, because it tells me I have found a muscle that is part of the problem.

You stay in control

I check in throughout the session and adjust to your comfort. You can ask me to pause at any time. Dry needling can be done at your comfort level and still be very effective, so a gentler session does not mean a weaker result.

Treatment usually takes 30 to 45 minutes and can start at the first visit. Sometimes I add electroacupuncture, a gentle current through the needles, which most people feel as a light pulsing.

Afterward

The treated area may feel sore for a day or two, similar to the day after a hard workout. Light movement, water and heat usually help. Some people feel looser right away, while others notice the change over the next day or two.

Many patients notice easier movement within the first few visits, though results vary. Before you leave, you get a plan that covers how many visits to expect and what to do at home.

Questions people ask

Will I bruise?

Very rarely. The needles are so fine that bruising is uncommon, and even patients on blood thinners usually have little or no bruising. Just let me know if you take one.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing works best, so the area being treated is easy to reach. Shorts are helpful for hip, leg and knee treatment.

I am nervous about needles. Can I still try it?

Yes. Many patients arrive nervous. I explain each step before I do it, start gently, and go at your pace. You can stop at any point.
