Multimodal Care for Complex Cases
Chronic pain treatment is selected from your anatomy, diagnosis, and clinical findings. Every plan has measurable functional goals and regular reassessment. Dr. Gordon welcomes coordinated referrals from physicians and physical therapists for complex cases.
Structural Tension
Tight, hypoxic muscle tissue, trigger points, and restricted fascia that physically compress nerves and joints, creating a mechanical source of pain.
Nervous System Sensitization
A central nervous system that has been over-reporting danger for so long it has become sensitized, amplifying pain signals even after the original injury has healed.
Dr. Gordon Addresses Both
Dry needling corrects the hardware. Neuro-functional acupuncture resets the software. Most chronic pain requires both, which is why single-modality approaches often fail.
How Each Treatment Works
Every Treatment, Both Layers
Most therapies work on one layer. Stretching, massage and exercise work on the hardware. Medication and many pain programs work on the software. When only one layer is treated, the other pulls the problem back. Here is how each of Dr. Gordon's treatments addresses both.
| Treatment | HardwareStructural | SoftwareNervous System |
|---|---|---|
| Functional Dry Needling | Releases trigger points and tight bands, restores normal muscle length and brings in fresh blood flow. | The twitch response breaks the pain-spasm cycle, so the nervous system stops holding the muscle tight. |
| Neuro-Functional Acupuncture and Electroacupuncture | Restores normal motor function, so muscles fire and relax the way they should. | Needles placed by nerve, plexus and spinal segment calm sensitization and turn down amplified pain signals. Gentle electrical stimulation strengthens the effect. |
| Focused Shockwave Therapy | Mainly a hardware treatment. Breaks down old damaged and scar tissue, drives circulation, turns stuck inflammation into active healing and recruits the body's own repair cells. | When the nervous system is part of the problem, Dr. Gordon recommends pairing shockwave with dry needling or neuro-functional acupuncture so the software is treated too. |
| Pelvic Floor Dry Needling | Releases tight, overactive deep pelvic floor muscles and trigger points. | Lets a pelvic floor that has been guarding in protection stand down. |
| Post-Cesarean Scar Therapy | Frees scar restriction and adhesions. | Calms trapped or irritated nerves around the scar and the guarding that often follows. |
Functional Dry Needling
Releases trigger points and tight bands, restores normal muscle length and brings in fresh blood flow.
The twitch response breaks the pain-spasm cycle, so the nervous system stops holding the muscle tight.
Neuro-Functional Acupuncture and Electroacupuncture
Restores normal motor function, so muscles fire and relax the way they should.
Needles placed by nerve, plexus and spinal segment calm sensitization and turn down amplified pain signals. Gentle electrical stimulation strengthens the effect.
Focused Shockwave Therapy
Mainly a hardware treatment.
Pelvic Floor Dry Needling
Releases tight, overactive deep pelvic floor muscles and trigger points.
Lets a pelvic floor that has been guarding in protection stand down.
Post-Cesarean Scar Therapy
Frees scar restriction and adhesions.
Calms trapped or irritated nerves around the scar and the guarding that often follows.
Not sure which you need? The introductory shockwave mapping and treatment visit is the recommended first step. The mapping locates the damaged tissue, and Dr. Gordon will tell you whether shockwave alone fits or whether your plan should pair it with dry needling or neuro-functional acupuncture.
Radiofrequency (TECAR) Therapy
Gentle, deep heat that relaxes tight tissue and brings blood flow to slow-healing tendons, joints, scars and the pelvic floor. Monopolar and bipolar, needle free, and part of your treatment visit.
Learn more about radiofrequency therapyFunctional Dry Needling
Intramuscular stimulation targeting myofascial trigger points, motor points, and peripheral nerves to restore neuromuscular function.
Functional Dry Needling (FDN) uses fine monofilament needles inserted directly into dysfunctional muscle tissue, trigger points, and motor points. Unlike acupuncture based on traditional meridian theory, FDN is guided by Western anatomy and physiology.
The technique elicits a local twitch response (an involuntary contraction of the muscle), which disrupts the pain-spasm cycle, restores normal muscle length, and promotes healing through increased blood flow and neurochemical changes.
Common Indications
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Chronic muscle tension
- Post-injury muscle dysfunction
- Movement impairment
- Headaches and neck pain
- Shoulder and rotator cuff dysfunction
Is this right for you?
If your pain is muscular, movement-related, or has a clear mechanical component, and standard physical therapy has plateaued, Functional Dry Needling is likely the most direct intervention available.
Neuro-Functional Acupuncture
A neuroanatomically-guided approach that stimulates specific nerve pathways to modulate pain signals and restore normal motor and sensory function.
Neuro-Functional Acupuncture (NFA) is a post-graduate specialty that applies acupuncture needles based on the anatomy of the peripheral and central nervous system. Points are selected for their proximity to specific nerves, nerve plexuses, and spinal segments.
NFA is particularly effective for conditions involving central sensitization, neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain syndromes where the nervous system itself has become dysregulated. It treats the nerves driving the pain as well as the area that hurts.
Common Indications
- Neuropathic pain
- Central sensitization
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Radiculopathy
- Fibromyalgia
- Post-surgical nerve pain
Is this right for you?
If your pain is nerve-related, widespread, or has persisted long after the original injury should have healed, your nervous system may be the primary driver. NFA addresses this directly.
Pelvic Floor Needling
Specialized intrapelvic and extrapelvic dry needling for pelvic floor hypertonicity, pelvic pain syndromes, and bladder or bowel dysfunction.
Pelvic floor dry needling is one of the most specialized and rarely offered clinical skills in the field. Dr. Gordon performs both extrapelvic and intrapelvic needling. Extrapelvic needling treats the hip, gluteal, abdominal and inner thigh muscles around the pelvis. Intrapelvic needling reaches the deep pelvic floor muscles through the skin of the buttock, perineum or inner thigh, never through the vagina or rectum. Together they address tight pelvic floor muscles, trigger points and connective tissue restrictions.
This approach is appropriate for patients with chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, interstitial cystitis, pudendal neuralgia, and post-surgical pelvic adhesions who have not responded to conventional pelvic floor physical therapy alone.
Common Indications
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Pelvic floor hypertonicity
- Interstitial cystitis
- Pudendal neuralgia
- Vaginismus and dyspareunia
- Post-surgical pelvic adhesions
Is this right for you?
If you have been diagnosed with CPPS, pudendal neuralgia or pelvic floor dysfunction and have not responded to standard pelvic PT, intrapelvic dry needling may help.
Post-Cesarean Scar Tissue & Pelvic Adhesion Therapy
Specialized micro-needling, orthopedic dry needling, and electro-acupuncture to break down dense C-section scar adhesions, restore fascial glide, and resolve persistent abdominal, pelvic, and nerve symptoms.
Cesarean birth leaves dense, fibrous scar tissue that frequently adheres to underlying abdominal, uterine, and pelvic fascia. Over time, these adhesions restrict tissue movement, pull on the pelvic floor, compress peripheral cutaneous nerves, and lead to persistent shelfing, pain, or lower abdominal numbness. Using precise micro-needling and orthopedic dry needling, this therapy targets the scar bed and surrounding fascial layers to disrupt adhesion formation and stimulate collagen remodeling.
Electro-acupuncture is applied to restore normal fascial glide between abdominal layers and desensitize entrapped cutaneous nerves responsible for numbness or hypersensitivity near the incision. Treatment addresses both the local scar tissue and the compensatory pelvic floor tightness and hip restriction that develop as the body adapts to anterior fascial pulling.
Common Indications
- Abdominal and pelvic pain around the incision or lower abdomen
- Numbness or hypersensitivity near the C-section scar
- Lower back and hip restriction from anterior scar pulling
- Bladder urgency or pressure from scar tethering
- Pelvic floor tightness secondary to fascial adhesion
- Post-surgical shelfing and restricted abdominal mobility
Is this right for you?
If you have pain, pulling, numbness or pelvic floor symptoms that started after a C-section and have not settled with time or standard care, scar-focused needling may help.
Spinal & Orthopedic Care
Targeted needling for spinal segmental dysfunction, radiculopathy, post-surgical scar tissue, and complex orthopedic injuries.
Spinal and orthopedic dry needling addresses the musculoskeletal and neurological components of spinal dysfunction and joint pathology. Dr. Gordon uses segmental needling along the spine to address paraspinal muscle hypertonicity, facet joint irritation, and nerve root sensitization.
For orthopedic cases, needling targets the specific muscles, tendons, and connective tissues involved in the injury or dysfunction, including post-surgical scar tissue that restricts movement and contributes to chronic pain.
Common Indications
- Lumbar and cervical disc dysfunction
- Radiculopathy and sciatica
- Post-surgical recovery
- Rotator cuff pathology
- Hip impingement
- Knee and ankle injuries
Is this right for you?
If you have a disc injury, radiculopathy, or orthopedic condition that has not resolved with standard care, spinal dry needling targets the specific segmental and muscular drivers that imaging often misses.

I originally came to see Dr. Gordon for shoulder pain that had persisted for months despite significant time working with physical therapists and sports orthopedists. After just one dry needling session, I finally felt relief, and that improvement continued with subsequent visits. I now see Dr. Gordon as needed to help me stay pain-free, active, and able to keep up with the hobbies I enjoy, even as chronic stress, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and the normal effects of aging take their toll physically. Dr. Gordon has also helped my 8-year-old son find relief from plantar fasciitis. I'm incredibly grateful to have found someone our family can turn to who listens, understands what's going on, and helps us get back to doing the things we love.
