Radiofrequency Therapy in North New Hyde Park
Radiofrequency therapy uses gentle, deep heat to relax tight tissue, bring blood flow to slow-healing areas and ease pain, with no needles. At the clinic on Union Turnpike in North New Hyde Park, NY, Dr. Anthony Gordon adds it to your treatment when muscles, tendons, joints, scars or the pelvic floor need more help to let go and heal.
It is part of your visit, not a separate appointment. Dr. Gordon decides when it will help and combines it with dry needling, acupuncture or shockwave.
What Is Radiofrequency (TECAR) Therapy?
TECAR stands for capacitive and resistive energy transfer. A handpiece passes a gentle radiofrequency current into the tissue. The current itself warms the tissue from the inside, so the heat reaches far deeper than a heating pad or hot pack.
The device has two modes:
- Capacitive mode warms muscle and the soft tissue under the skin.
- Resistive mode reaches denser tissue such as tendons, ligaments, joints and scar tissue.
Dr. Gordon switches between the two modes and adjusts the heat to the area and to how acute the problem is.
How It Helps
- More blood flow. Deep warming opens small blood vessels, bringing oxygen and nutrients to tissue that heals slowly, like tendons.
- Softer, more elastic tissue. Warm muscle and fascia stretch and release more easily, which helps dry needling and manual work go further.
- Less pain and guarding. Heat calms the muscle spasm and protective tension that keep pain going.
- Scar and adhesion work. Warming stiff scar tissue may help it soften and move more freely.

How Dr. Gordon Uses It
Radiofrequency is rarely the whole treatment. It prepares tissue and helps the rest of your care work better.
- With dry needling: warming first lets tight muscles release more easily and eases soreness afterward.
- With focused shockwave: shockwave starts the repair response in a tendon or joint, and radiofrequency brings blood flow to support it.
- With pelvic floor care: gentle heat over the pelvis, hips and lower back relaxes guarded muscles before hands-on work or pelvic floor dry needling.
- For nerve pain: it helps settle the muscles and tissue around an irritated nerve so it has room to calm down.
Monopolar and Bipolar Radiofrequency
Dr. Gordon has both types, so the heat can be matched to how deep the problem sits.
- Monopolar radiofrequency sends the current from the handpiece to a return plate placed elsewhere on the body. Because it travels through the body, it reaches deep tissue such as large muscles, the low back, hips, pelvis and deep tendons.
- Bipolar radiofrequency keeps the current between two points inside the same handpiece. The heat stays closer to the surface and more focused, which suits scars, tendons just under the skin and smaller joints like the hand, wrist, foot and ankle.
Some treatments use both: monopolar for the deeper layers, then bipolar to work the surface tissue around a scar or tendon.
What It Feels Like
Most patients feel a steady, comfortable warmth that builds slowly. There are no needles and nothing breaks the skin. Dr. Gordon checks in with you and turns the heat up or down as you need. Many people find it relaxing.
Afterward the area may feel loose and warm. You can go back to normal activity the same day.
What the Research Says
TECAR has been studied mostly in sports injuries, low back pain, tendon problems and pelvic pain. A 2025 review of 8 studies with 399 participants found that it lowered pain in sports-related injuries. A 2026 randomized trial of 80 women with chronic pelvic pain found that active radiofrequency reduced pain more than a sham treatment, manual therapy or no treatment. The research is still growing and most studies are small, so Dr. Gordon uses radiofrequency as one part of a plan, not on its own.
Is It Safe for Me?
Radiofrequency is gentle and non-invasive. Dr. Gordon screens you first. It is not used:
- If you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device
- During pregnancy
- Over an area with cancer, an active infection or a blood clot
- If you have a serious heart condition
Tell Dr. Gordon about any metal implants, recent surgery or areas with reduced feeling so he can plan around them.
